Taos Ski Valley made history as North America’s first ski resort to use fully electric snow groomers. The PistenBully 100 E Snowcat debuted on Taos’ mountain this Wednesday, furthering Taos’ commitment to becoming a fully-operating, net-zero carbon emission company by 2030.

Taos has already made strides in its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. The resort currently uses highly efficient snowmaking and grooming equipment on the mountain, according to CBS17 News. This technology significantly reduces the energy used, improving the overall air quality in the area.

Off the mountain, Taos has implemented sustainable strategies into their everyday business operations that allow the resort to be environmentally conscious while still operating efficiently for all visitors. They have reduced their food waste and methane gas emissions by adding food composters to restaurants on the mountain. In addition, the resort plans to add 20 new EV charging stations for guests to use, which will encourage drivers to use environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Taos Ski Valley’s CEO, Dave Norden, said he believes it is the resort’s responsibility to operate as sustainably as possible. Investing in the new PistenBully Snowcat is taking the resort further in the right direction.

“Achieving net-zero carbon emissions is the right thing to do for our community, our local environment, and the entire outdoor recreation industry, which is on the frontline of the climate crisis,” Norden said. “We’re grateful to the teams at PistenBully and Kässbohrer All-Terrain Vehicles that partnered with us and worked with us to help us secure this new snowcat.”

It is clear to see that Taos is genuinely committed to making their mountain a better, more sustainable community. The resort is actively demonstrating this mantra every day by encouraging guests to recycle, compost, and reduce their own carbon footprints. Taos Ski Valley’s executives have conducted extensive research on the best, most efficient ways to achieve their net-zero goal by 2030. The resort has been recognized as a Golden Eagle Award winner three times by the National Ski Areas Association for its commitment to making the world a better place through research, education, and change.

Hopefully, Taos is setting the new standard of normal for all other North American ski resorts. The 100% electric PistenBully snowcat could single-handedly change the game for ski resorts. A large percentage of a resort’s carbon emissions can be traced back to its grooming and plowing activities. If all ski resorts invested in this new technology, there would be a massive decrease in carbon emissions across the world.
